Stainless Steel Fastener Galling: Assembly and Ordering Guide

At a glance

Plan thread condition, lubrication and assembly trials before ordering stainless steel fasteners in batches.

Understand thread seizure

Galling can occur when mating threads adhere under friction. Stainless steel corrosion resistance does not prevent this assembly problem. A seized thread may damage both components; increasing force is not a reliable remedy.

Agree on lubrication and surface condition

Discuss compatible lubrication or surface treatments for the application. Record the agreed condition in the purchasing specification. Validate the tightening procedure with that condition; a lubricant change should not inherit an unreviewed torque setting.

Prepare a representative assembly trial

Send the mating part specification, service environment and planned assembly method with the RFQ. Confirm samples, assembly checks and acceptance criteria before releasing a production batch. This guide does not establish a universal tightening torque.
