At a glance
Specify the material standard, heat-treatment condition and finished-fastener requirements when sourcing chromium-molybdenum steel fasteners.
Start with the exact material designation
Write the material grade together with its governing standard and delivery condition. Avoid specifying only “alloy steel” when the drawing requires a particular chemistry or mechanical performance.
42CrMo, 42CrMo4 and SAE 4140 are related designations, but they should not be accepted as automatic substitutes. Compare the governing specifications, chemical limits, product form and required tests before approving a substitution. Ovako lists 4140 among similar designations for 42CrMo4 and identifies specific variants separately.
Heat treatment and section size matter
Ovako describes 42CrMo4 as a quenching and tempering steel and reports mechanical properties by delivery condition and bar diameter. This illustrates why a grade name alone does not determine the properties of every finished part.
For a fastener quotation, state the required finished-part property class or mechanical specification. Ask how heat treatment, section size and final testing will be controlled for the supplied product.
Read certificates against the order
Check that the certificate identifies the specified grade and material standard, heat or lot number, delivery condition and required test results. Confirm how the material identification is carried through to the finished fastener lot.
A raw-material certificate does not by itself verify the dimensions, coating or final mechanical properties of a finished bolt. Request the inspection records required by the purchase specification.
Prepare a useful material enquiry
Send the drawing revision, material standard, finished dimensions, required strength and toughness, service temperature, surface treatment and quantity. If an alternative material is proposed, request a comparison of the requirements and obtain approval before production.
